E ( and ultimately EELS) ows a lot of his career to Chris Douridas. Throughout most of the 1990s, Douridas was music director at Santa Monica based radio station KCRW, best known for his work as the host of the popular program Morning Becomes Eclectic. Douridas was the first to play demos from (then) unsigned artists such as Beck, Gillian Welch and EELS.
At one point Douridas became an A&R executive at DreamWorks Records. First band he signed: EELS. As a music supervisor Douridas worked for movies such as Shrek 2 and American Beauty. Guess which band delivered the stand out tracks on those soundtracks? Indeed...
While working at both DreamWorks and KCRW, Douridas hosted the debut season of the PBS tv-show Sessions At West 54th, a critically acclaimed weekly music performance and interview program on PBS. No wonder EELS were invited to play a short but sweet set in the first season. The same show also had Philip Glass performing his Planctus (with vocals by Natalie Merchant) and Facades. The EELS' set consisted of Susan's House, Flower, Beautiful Freak and Novocaine For The Soul.
