Weird show. The club was TINY and probably not the right place to see an Electro-Shock Blues Show. There wasn't even enough room on the stage for the 'applause' sign. The audience kept talking and talking... The EELS were playing extremely aggressive versions of Souljacker, Novocaine For The Soul and Not Ready Yet and still the audience was not paying too much attention. During the set E was very talkative and constantly complaining about all the smoking people (as it was a non-smoking show). Due to all the smoke in the club, the band did not return after Hospital Food and left the stage with quite a few more unplayed songs on the setlist. The EELS vowed never to return to this place again. Can you imagine their surprise 3 years later?
Here's what an audience member wrote to the Eels.nl team about it: "I also saw them in Utrecht, but yesterday they were in a really bad mood. I talked to E after the show, by handing him a single of a greek band "eels" and he was very friendly and signed my EELS-comic. I asked about his mood, and why there was only 1 encore and he said "it was to smoky" but this seemed not to be the right answer."
