the official program:

AN EVENING WITH THE MAN CALLED E, VOICE OF THE EELS
Mark Oliver Everett, aka "E", the man who writes the songs that make a small portion of the world cry, brings his iconoclastic brand of alternative pop music-making to the Getty.
Produced by Community Arts Resources.
Limit of 4 seats per reservation.
Friday, October 20, 2000, 7:30 p.m., Harold M. Williams Auditorium.

Throughout his career the man called E has developed what The New Yorker called "that rarest of things : a unique sound." The Los Angeles based singer songwriter multi-instrumentalist began his musical career by releasing two solo albums, A Man Called E and Broken Toy shop. Eventually he assmbled the acclaimed group, the EELS.

Since then the EELS have provided the constantly changing face of E's vision with three brilliant albums: 1996's Beautiful Freak, 1998's Electro-Shock Blues and most recently Daisies Of The Galaxy, which was supported on the road by the addition of hornss reddes and strings-dubbed the EELS Orchestra 2000. While this group presents imaginatively arranged versions of the EELS' music, E is often at his best as a oneman show. His solo performances span the range from humor to heartfelt emoion and are as entertaining and espressive as they are artistcally thrilling, depending on the night you catch him.

It is also widely believed that E is the REAL slim shady.

info:

After It's A Motherfucker E invites someone to the massive and vacant chair onstage for a better view. A girl in the front row takes the chair. The girl felt self concious on the stage and somewhat secretly sneaked off after a song or two. After the only known live rendition of Christmas Is Going To The Dogs E realises that the chair is empty again. Long time EELS-fan Justin Riner shouts out to E: "Hey E, can my friend Joel sit up there... this is his first time seeing you!". So E has Joel Wilson up and the interaction between the two of them supposedly is hysterical. E had his crew bring him water and a sandwich and after the show and eventually Joel went backstage with E.

Throughout the set a lot of rarities and unreleased songs are played. Radiohead Show is a reaction to the huge outdoor concert the Britrockers are doing elsewhere in Los Angeles that same night and features lyrics like: "Don't you wish you were at the Radiohead show...". When the song is over E states: "I wrote that stuck in traffic on the way over here. I know the decision was quite hard for some of you. But let me say this, it looks like rain folks!"

Replaced is another unreleased song. Lyrics: "Can't hurt you if you don't feel". E tells the audience he has written Kennedy Curse with Peter Buck. Some of the lyrics: "Here I am, Im still here living in the universe and everybodys scared but I dont believe the Kennedy Curse". Live rarity (and Eels.nl favourite) Something Is Sacred is played with the guitar out of tune. E: "Oh well... This is a free show right?"
