A Man Called (E) Discography
Yes dear EELS fan, Mr. E did have a musical career way before you got to know him and his music as 'EELS'. Before that, he was A Man Called (E) and even way before that he was just who he is now. Mark Everett that is. Here's an overview of his creative output throughout the late eighties and early nineties of the last century.
Bad Dude In Love
release date: 1985
label: Joe Mama Records
[Quite a rare find - IF you find this, that is - that is the earliest known musical release by Mr. Everett. Released only on vinyl in a very limited quantity. More info on this release can be found here]

Hello Cruel World
release date: December, 1991
label: Polydor
catalogue number: CDP 533
[A bulky double sided promo glued together with Shakespeare's Sister's Goodbye Cruel World. Initial copies came with a purple flyer with info on both artists. If you find this item, be sure not to put it into your cd-player, unless you want to buy a new one the day after. But it's a mighty fine collectible!]

A Man Called (E)

label: Polydor
catalogue number promo: SACD 454
catalogue number cd: 314 511 570-2
catalogue number cassette: 314 511 570-4
catalogue number LP (Korea only): RG 3066
[This album was released on cassette and cd, and some were available in a longbox. Some copies came with a free t-shirt. In Korea A Man Called E was released on vinyl. "It's actually a US pressed LP, but it was exported to Korea and released by the Ministry Of Culture", says the world's biggest EELS collector and connaisseur Rik, from EELS The Discography. Recently Japanese vinyl bootleg versions also appeared on the market, but those look a lot less cool in their plain white sleeves. The promotional cd is a small gem, as it comes in a lovely gatefold sleeve that has a bio on the inside]

Broken Toy Shop
release date: December 7, 1993
label: Polydor
catalogue number promo: SACD 769
catalogue number cd: 3314 519 976-2
catalogue number cassette: 314 519 976-4
[This album was released on cassette and cd and has been out of print for a couple of years now. Broken Toy Shop is highly sought after by 'new' EELS fans nowadays. Only a few months after the release of the album, Polydor stopped promoting E and they 'let him go' from his contract. Supposedly E thinks this is the worst album cover in his discography. Like the A Man Called (E) album, this one also got a shabby looking bootleg vinyl release in Japan]

04 Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas
The Only Thing I Care About
release date: 1993
label: Polydor
catalogue number: CDP 1146
[Only available as a one track radio promo. Some (well, actually most...) copies came without artwork]
01 The Only Thing I Care About
Unreleased cover EP
[There's even room in the discography for a project that did not see the light of day. Back in 1992 E recorded the covers you'll find on various cd's further on in this discography for a project he was working on. It was supposed to be a 'bridge' between his first and second album, but for one reason or another it remained unreleased. More info on it here]
Spread The Jam 1
release date: 1991
label: Navarre
catalogue number: JAM1
[14-track promotional in-store sampler with artists such as Pearl Jam, Lush, The KLF and... E]
02 Hello Cruel World
Cream Of Cuts
release date: 1994
label: Polydor
catalogue number: SACD 818
[14-track promotional sampler with artists that were on the Polydor label. This item is the least interesting of the two (or rather, three) Cream Of Cuts cd's out there]
06 Shine It All On
Cream Of Cuts
release date: 1994
label: Polydor
catalogue number: SACD 858
[18-track promotional sampler with artists that were on the Polydor label. This one is a rather weird item in the E discography. We're not sure which one was released first, but there are two Cream Of Cuts compilations with catalogue number SACD 858. They both start out completely identical, but after 5 tracks the tracklisting begins to change. Amongst the differences is that one cd contain E's lovely cover of The Platters' The Great Pretender. The other cd has the album version of The Only Thing I Care About placed on it]
13 The Great Pretender

10 The Only Thing I Care About
Sing Hollies In Reverse
release date: 1995
label: Eggbert
catalogue number: ER80018CD
[This incredibly fun tribute to powerpop kings The Hollies features E solo (Jennifer Eccles) as wel as E doing background vocals on Jon Brion's take on Sorry Suzanne. Jennifer Eccles later appeared again on the EELS single Souljacker part 1] and on the Useless Trinkets compilation]
09 Jennifer Eccles
21 Sorry Suzanne
18 Original Hits By 18 Unoriginal Artists
release date: 1995
label: PolyGram
catalogue number: PMP-011
[PolyGram dug deep into their archives to include the version E did of Elton John's Friends on this lovely compilation. The track was recorded (probably) in 1992]
15 Friends
Chartbusters 20-i-Toppar
release date: 1998
label: PolyGram
catalogue number: PMP-017
[Again the archives are robbed for a cd that - like the other compilations mentioned on this page - is good fun. Four years after he was released from his contract, Polydor dug up E's version of Madonna's Angel, which also was on the Ultra Rare Trax tape. This track was (probably) recorded in 1992]
14 Angel
