Tour Of Duty 2003

Band personnel

  • Mark Oliver Everett (E) - Vocals, Guitar, Keys
  • Rusty Loggsdon (Koool G Murder) - Bass, Keys
  • Darren Hahn (Puddin') - Drums
  • Shon Sullivan (Goldenboy) - Guitar, Vocals [1st leg of tour]
  • Chet Lyster (Chet Atkins III) - Guitar, Vocals [2nd leg of tour]
  • VARIOUS DATES 2003

After about 10 years of loyal service Butch calls it a day. The official word is that he's busy touring with Tracy Chapman (which he indeed is... and so is Joe Gore). The unofficial version that has been strongly rumoured is that Butch and E had an argument about Butch' role in the band. Which actually makes it very ironical that during the Souljacker tour after Butch' solo-song (Sad Clown) the band returned for one more song minus Butch. Back then E told the audience that 'Butch has embarked on a solo-tour'. Darren Hahn (called Puddin' on this tour) is supposedly Butch' cousin and he's the replacement drummer.

    EUROPE 2003 - Leg 1

The Tour Of Duty promotes the 2003 EELS release Shootenanny!, an album recorded right after the 2002 Souljacker tour with the 2002 touring band and some extra guests such as Lisa Germano. Early 2003 also sees the release of the MC Honky album I Am The Messiah, strongly rumoured to be collaboration between E and musical collaborators such as Butch, Joey Waronker and others. A feud between E and MC Honky was insinuated, along with a peace offering in the end... MC Honky (or at least a guy pretending to be him) opens for EELS during the 2003 tour.

    U.S.A. 2003 - Leg 1

The start of what would become one of the longest headlining EELS tours through the United States ever (if you count both legs of the U.S. tour) and it's a blast for everyone involved. Although E and MC Honky were argueing throughout the tour. "I know the guy has never been on tour before and he's not used to all the attention, but bringing a topless groupie on MY stage is going way too far. I don't know if I can take him anymore. He belongs back in his bedroom with his turntables to keep him company", E stated at one point. E performed the tour with voice problems. Having blown out his voice during the U.K. leg of the EELS Tour of Duty, did not stop him from performing in the U.S.A. But it seems that was an unwise decision...

    EUROPE 2003 - Leg 2

During the 10 day break between the U.S. and European festival tour, E had to stay quiet by doctor's orders. His voice being highly abused in Europe, after which he continued to use it in the same way for another 30 or so shows after, left E no other choice. "The EELS entourage is enjoying this rare quiet time", the official site wrote. E's voice was healed just in time for the European summer festivals. Yes, there was rock. The EELS came and conquered Europe once again.

    AUSTRALIA and JAPAN 2003

Short but sweet, a very well received tour down under and in the far east. The first show had to be rescheduled as the equipment of the band had not yet arrived at the venue. The annoncement from from promoter Michael Chugg reads: "The EELS' 2.5 tonnes of equipment due to arrive in Australia last night was delayed in London and re-routed through Singapore. As a result it will be arriving in Sydney a few hours too late for tonight's show, Friday 12th at The Enmore to take place. As a result the show has had to be shifted by one day to Saturday 13. The EELS profusely apologise for the inconvenience and hope that all ticket-holders for the Friday 12th will now join them on Saturday 13th. All tickets for Friday 12th are now valid for Saturday 13th. Same time, same place, one day later. All tickets for Saturday night are, of course, still valid. The band have promised to do the show of their lives on Saturday to make up for the inconvenience". We are told that Australia is still not yet recovered from 'the show of the EELS' lives'...

    U.S.A. 2004

It kinda looked like E fell off the face of the earth in 2004. Hence the omission of an actual 2004 page on this website. E spent the majority of the year relaxing and healing his throat. Plus there was some hard work to be done on the Blinking Lights And Other Revelations album, due out in 2005 and already labelled 'the mother of all EELS albums' back in 2004. E made only one public appearance in 2004, when he showd up to pay tribute to the ever so wonderful Mr. Randy Newman. On various soundtracks and tribute albums some new recordings saw the light of day.
