Eel [iːl] n 1. Any teleost fish of the order Apodes or Anguilliformes having a long snakelike body, a smooth slimy skin, and reduced fins 2. Any of various other animals with a long body and smooth skin, such as the mud eel and the electric eel
The eel is a strange creature which moves itself through the ocean without ribs or a swimming bladder. The jaws of this animal are powerful and big. The eel feeds itself with small crawfish, shrimps and other fish. The eel opens its mouth while in the water and catches the prey. It is comparible to the way a whale catches fish. Eels are being divided in four commercial species: the American eel, the European eel, the Japanese eel, and the short-finned eel. Another very well know eel is the electric eel, which defends itself by generating powerful electric shocks. This is a good way of scaring off enemies or paralyze a prey.
The electric eel has an electric receptor which can produce a shock of up to 600 volt. The electric organs of the eel consist of muscle disks which are to be found throughout the whole body of the fish. This means that, when the eel keeps growing, the amount of disks will increase. When the amount of disks is higher, the voltage will increase as well. A longer eel will be able to produce a more powerful shock than a shorter eel.
